Shmikko’s Salamanca Market stall is the place to find unique shard jewellery, designed and handcrafted in Tasmania by Cathy Joyce. Shards of vintage crockery are recycled into exquisite necklace pendants, brooches and earrings.
Each piece of jewellery is a one-of-a-kind artisan creation, handmade from broken china pieces wrapped in copper foil and soldered. Earring wires are sterling silver. The copper foil technique was made popular in the early 1900s by L.C. Tiffany’s intricately detailed lampshades. The process involves wrapping pieces of glass or china in copper foil and soldering along the edges.
Vintage crockery is increasingly hard to find and each broken plate, saucer or teacup makes limited unique jewellery pieces. Every Shmikko creation is one-of-a-kind, beautiful and affordable, so if you see something you like when visiting Shmikko, purchase it while you’re there, as particular pieces cannot be reproduced.
Also at Shmikko, you’ll find juggling balls, as well as miniature model guitars and drum kits, designed to replicate real instruments that have been played by some of the world’s greatest rock performers.
